Asian Communities Healing Group

 

​Dr. Zhaoyi Chen will be running a culturally-informed process group on Wednesdays 7:30-8:30PM for Asian and Asian American adults 18+ navigating issues related to race, acculturation, identity development, and mental health. This group provides individuals with a dedicated space to process cultural stressors within a community of shared experiences. During group sessions, individuals can identify issues important to them without fear of judgement, participate in discussions and guided reflections, and work with reactions and responses they receive from group members to gain insights into how their identities impact their mental health and relationships with others.

Who May Benefit:

Individuals who identify as Asian or Asian American adults and are experiencing:

  • Distress related to racialized experiences or identity

  • Acculturation stress or bicultural conflict

  • Family/cultural role strain

  • Feelings of isolation or invisibility

  • Desire for culturally attuned support

 

This group can help you: 

  • Manage symptoms of anxiety & depression; Increase self-worth 

  • Engage in identity exploration and reach personal growth 

  • Find value and comfort in vulnerability 

  • Build coping skills to increase resilience & empowerment 

  • Establish a community to reduce isolation 

  • Gain empathy and self-compassion 

  • Feel seen, heard, and validated

Group Themes Include:

  • Belonging, othering experiences, forming connections

  • Acculturation challenges and bicultural identities

  • Intergenerational dynamics and cultural expectations

  • Racism, discrimination, and minority stress

  • Emotional expression & mental health

  • Anxiety, depression, self-worth, and relationships

  • Resilience, coping, and empowerment within cultural context

Format & Logistics:

  • 10 weekly 60-minute sessions (with option to continue)

  • Small, closed group for safety and cohesion

  • Virtual, NY & NJ residents eligible

  • Wednesdays at 7:30pm

  • Start Date: February 25th

  • Fee: $100/session (sliding scale slots available)

Facilitator:
The group will be facilitated by Dr. Zhaoyi Chen through City Lights Psychology. Dr. Chen is a Chinese bilingual (English/Mandarin) licensed clinical psychologist with lived experience as an international student and working with Asian/Asian American populations on multicultural issues.
